  製造工程を見ていると、ライカのレンズが高価なのも理解できる。

  
  伝説的なライカのレンズは、ドイツの工場で手作りされている。中国や台湾の工場も、適切な経営管理や訓練が行われれば高品質の製品を作る可能性はあるが、ドイツ国内にいる熟練した職人たちのようになるまでには数年はかかるだろう。動画を見てほしい。

  細かな手作業のレベルは驚くほど高い。レンズ・エレメントのエッジの黒いところが手で塗装されていたとは知っていただろうか？ レンズ・バレルに刻まれたマークのペンキ塗装が手作業だったと知っていただろうか？ 筆者も知らなかった。[墨入れはレンズの側面を内面反射防止のために黒く塗る工程。きれいに塗るためには人の手が不可欠で、機械化が最も難しい工程のひとつだという]

  レンズがどうやって作られるか見るだけでも楽しい動画だ。ところで、ライカの職人たちは、白衣着用を義務づけられているのだろうが、厳格そうに見える灰色の口ひげも義務なのだろうか？
